Caltex signs regional deals with EDS

Johannesburg, 21 Jun 2001

Caltex Oil (SA) (Pty) Ltd has selected EDS as a strategic IT outsourcing partner for the provision of infrastructure services. In terms of a recent agreement, EDS is providing Caltex with services including data centre management, LAN, WAN and desk-side support throughout Southern Africa.

Operations are based at Caltex`s head office in Cape Town, but EDS also manages Caltex facilities in countries like Malawi, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.

According to management at Caltex South Africa, the ability to work on a global basis was a key influencing factor. Caltex needed proven network management skills and the assurance of reliable support. Caltex sees this as a strategic move that will help the company focus on its core business. The move to outsource to EDS is a global Caltex business strategy.

According to EDS South Africa chairman, Michael Minassian, the company`s global technical infrastructure and skills base have been key to securing the new contracts EDS Africa has won in the last few months, and the company is well on its way to achieving significant growth for 2001. Says Minassian: "We are very pleased to have the opportunity to provide Caltex South Africa with so strategic a solution. Caltex has also signed a global outsourcing agreement with EDS, and this local relationship demonstrates the strength brought about by our global presence. This worldwide footprint boosts our ability to deliver solutions to local companies with global reach, and to win business from multinationals with operations in SA."

This is the first time EDS has been contracted to work for Caltex in SA. "It greatly boosts our position in SA`s IT services market, estimated by the International Data Corporation to be worth about $1.7 billion in SA in 2000," says Minassian. "EDS Africa is excited about this new partnership and is proud to be associated with Caltex."
