The Dorval Family Health Network and the Brandon Clinic in Canada have reached their medical and business objectives of quality care delivery and cost reduction with Asystar Medical Record Solutions, an InterSystems partner.
Asystar builds practice management software on InterSystems` post-relational CACH'E database. It specialises in providing medical practice management software with computerised medical records for clients across Canada and the US.
The Dorval Family Health Network was the first such network in Ontario. Under the network model, doctors work with other healthcare professionals to provide primary care and advice on a 24x7 basis.
"The emphasis in this network is on prevention and comprehensive care," says Dr George Southey, lead doctor of Dorval. "CACH'E`s rapid application development capabilities played a major role when the transition was made from a fee-for-service model to the network of clinics." The CACH'E platform enables rapid, easy development of new functions. Asystar added new features to the platform, including the capability to create and maintain a patient roster, the ability to update demographics from government reports and the ability to make the changes needed to meet standards.
Asystar built a customised routine for Dorval that made it possible to synchronise patient registration data with the registration information of the Ontario government.
Asystar also built a sophisticated querying capability on CACH'E that generates automatic reminders of required preventative procedures when a patient`s record is displayed.
"The family health network model includes specific preventive and immunisation targets, including: providing flu immunisations for 80% of the patient population over the age of 65; pap smears for 80% of the target population; mammograms for 75% of women ages 50-70; and complete childhood immunisations for 95% of the target group," Southey says.
CACH'E-based Asystar has also had a positive impact on the bottom line of the Brandon Clinic, a 33-doctor facility with full lab and X-ray capabilities.
The Brandon Clinic makes extensive use of the Asystar online laboratory and consultation modules, thereby eliminating paper shuffling throughout the organisation, says InterSystems SA country manager Henry Adams.
"By cutting paperwork, the doctors at the Brandon Clinic can see more patients, and that means an increased revenue stream," Adams says. "With the ability to access the application via the Web, doctors are now able to work securely from their homes, and installation cost and time has decreased.
"The capabilities of CACH'E, as documented and reported by Asystar, are prime reasons why the database has become the most successful in the healthcare market worldwide," Adams concludes.
