Canon introduces its highest ever cost-performance EOS

Johannesburg, 17 Aug 2001

Canon South Africa has launched its new EOS 3000N, the most outstanding cost performance EOS ever to be introduced to the market. Offering enhanced operability over its predecessor, the EOS 3000, this new SLR features a new sophisticated and elegant design.

With its eye-catching silver metallic finish, the EOS 3000N is Canon`s new entry level EOS, ideal for the newcomer to SLR photography, yet with enough advanced features to satisfy owners as their photographic skills develop. It is an ultra compact and light weight camera, and while retaining all of the same basic features of its predecessor, the EOS 3000N offers additional improvements to further enhance ease of use, such as AEB, E-TTL autoflash metering, manual focusing point selection and a Night Scene mode.

High-performance wide-area auto-focusing The EOS 3000N uses a wide-area 3-point focusing system. Each of the focusing points can be selected and you can switch by automatic or manual selection. The focusing points are displayed in the viewfinder. With the three focusing points, even off-centre subjects are captured perfectly.

Full Range of Exposure Control Function

Exposure metering is performed using 6-zone evaluative metering, partial metering at centre, or centre weighted averaging metering system. In addition, manual exposure correction (+/- 2 stops) is also available.

With EOS dedicated external speedlites, E-TTL (Evaluative Through-The-Lens) autoflash metering is made possible. This system uses the camera`s evaluative metering sensors for the flash reading. Together with the three focusing points that are linked to E-TTL autoflash metering, it will be possible to illuminate subjects with the correct exposure, even if these are to the left or right of the centre of the frame.

The camera also features a retractable TTL auto exposure flash unit. When shooting in low-light or back-lit situations in the Full Auto and Programmed Image Control (PIC)(except Landscape and Sports) modes, the flash - when popped up - automatically fires as the exposure is made.

The new EOS 3000N also provides Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) allowing users to shoot three frames in rapid succession from -2 to +2 stops, in 1/2 stop increments. For difficult lighting situations this gives users the opportunity to make the perfect exposed shot.

The camera has a red-eye reduction mode, and the built-in flash has a guide number of 12 (ISO 100, m) and an illumination angle wide enough to cover the field-of-view of a 28mm lens.

Easy Operation

The EOS 3000N incorporates a quiet film transport facility and film advance with a speed of one frame per second. It accepts the full range of more than 60 EF lenses and many of the great variety of Canon system accessories.

Two focusing modes are available - One shot AF and One-shot AF/AI auto switching. These are selected automatically by the camera according to the shooting mode. If the subject moves, the camera tracks the subject until the focus is achieved before the exposure starts. Manual focusing is also possible.

The EOS 3000N uses the familiar Canon command dial for the easy selection of operating modes. With the addition of a new "Night Scene" mode, the EOS 3000N now offers five PIC (Programme Image Control) modes, which also include Portrait, Landscape, Close-up and Sports. A full auto mode provides general settings to suit most subjects.

An Auto Depth mode allows the camera to automatically set an aperture, which will bring all three focusing points of the subject area within the depth-of-field. Also included on the command dial of the EOS 3000N is P mode; in this intelligent program AE the camera will set both the shutter speed and aperture for the exposure. Av mode for aperture priority and Tv mode for shutter speed priority, respectively, select the matching shutter speed and aperture for optimum exposure, while M is for manual control.

The camera will be available as a Quartz-Date (QD) model and a non-QD model.
