Canopus MPEG-2 encoding offerings available from MMW

Canopus Corporation has released the Amber real-time MPEG-2 encoding module for its real-time nonlinear editing solutions, DVRexRT, available from Multimedia Warehouse, a member of the Siltek IT Supply Chain Group.

In addition, Canopus has also added an MPEG-2 Adobe Premiere export feature to Amber for DVD that allows Amber users to export directly from Premiere (using any Premiere-based NLE system) for DVD authoring.

"Amber has an easy-to-understand user interface that provides complete control of the MPEG-2 compression process, along with preview before and during encoding. Based on the MN85560 MPEG-2 encoder chip from Panasonic in combination with Canopus' MPEG audio encoding technology, Amber delivers the high-quality video and audio output required for DVD authoring and video streaming," says Jaco Laubcher, product manager at Multimedia Warehouse.

Amber encodes analogue footage in real-time using Main Profile at Main Level MPEG-2, also called MP@ML. While other MPEG-2 systems use I-frame or IP-frame only, MP@ML provides true IBP frame format. With Composite and S-video inputs, Amber is scalable up to Full-D1 resolution with NTSC and PAL format support.

"With variable and constant bit rate options (from 1Mbps to 15Mbps), users can adjust the bandwidth depending on the complexity of the video. Variable bit rate encoding is one of the most effective techniques used to maintain video quality while reducing file size. One the audio front, Amber supports PCM and MPEG-layer I and Layer II formats up to 48khz at 16 bits," says Laubscher.

With the Amber module, Canopus' real-time customers are able to easily encode their edited video productions directly from Adobe Premiere or Canopus Rex Edit nonlinear editing software. "This allows video professionals to convert DV format to MPEG-2 format directly, resulting in exceptional video quality," adds Laubscher.
