Forty individuals have been awarded for successfully completing the CAPACITi programme.
They were handed certificates of completion at a two-day function held at Old Mutual, in Pinelands, yesterday.
The programme, initiated in 2011, targets non-IT graduates and has seen 80 unemployed graduates develop into business and systems analysts through a model that combines education with work experience, and ultimately, a recruitment opportunity that fast-tracks them into the IT industry.
"The programme is open to graduates with a prior non-IT qualification. It provides participants with a post-graduate diploma or NQF level 8 from the University of Cape Town (UCT), an internship at a host company, and mentor and training support," says Jenny McKinnell, group executive director for CITi, TheBarn and CAPACITi.
CAPACITi is part of a joint venture between CITi, the Western Cape government, the Insurance Seta (INSETA), the Wholesale & Retail Seta (W&RSETA), UCT and host companies in the IT, insurance and retail sectors.
According to CAPACITi, the function celebrated the achievements of new incumbents who currently possess medical, commerce and finance degrees but have struggled to find employment.
Addressing the gathering, Alan Winde, Western Cape MEC for finance, economic development and tourism, encouraged business and education organisations to continue collaborating in order to address the skills shortages and deal with unemployment.
While completing the programme, participants are given an opportunity to intern with host companies. Upon completion, many receive permanent employment with their host companies, CAPACITi adds.
The CAPACITi programme forms part of the group vision of CITi, TheBarn and CAPACITi to build entrepreneurs, talent and ecosystems, and to create 5 000 additional jobs in the next five years.
