Today is the second annual Social Media Day, a global event organised by Internet news site Mashable. The event includes 1 400 meet-ups, with 7 000 attendees scheduled on six continents.
Mashable says the purpose of the day is to acknowledge and celebrate the way in which media has become more social - and to do so by doing exactly that.
A Mashable Meet-up page was established to help facilitate the organisation of “meet-ups” around the world, and participation has doubled since the inaugural event last year.
Meet-up groups in SA have been formed in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
Participation in Social Media Day also extends beyond the actual meet-ups, and people are encouraged to get involved by using the Twitter hashtag #smday.
The same hashtag can also be used to tag photos and videos uploaded to the Web. Twitter users can also follow the Social Media Day handle @mashSMday.
“There's no better way to celebrate the revolution of media becoming a social dialogue than by socialising with your online community offline,” says Mashable.
Each Social Media Day meet-up is allowed to take any form the organisers like, ranging from seminars and parties, to mass planking sessions.
A group of Londoners will mark the occasion with a planking flash mob in Soho Square.
On the local front, Capetonians can meet up with 136 other social media enthusiasts by visiting the Cape Town Meet-up page and choosing between the lunch or dinnertime events. The Johannesburg meet-up is planned for 7pm, at Primi Piatti, at the Design Quarter, in Fourways.
