outage yesterday, caused by a break.

The outage, which happened mid-morning on Wednesday, was resolved within a couple of hours, as technicians worked on-site to fix the fibre break on Dark Fibre Africa's (DFA's) network, which provides fibre backhaul links to Cell C's base stations.

As subscribers turned to social networks to voice their frustration, Cell C responded with a number of updates.

The cellular provider posted on Facebook: “We have a number of sites down in Pretoria and Midrand, affecting both voice and services. Technicians are on-site, working hard to restore services soon.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and will make an announcement as soon as the problem has been resolved.”

Two hours later, at 1pm, Cell C posted: “We can confirm that voice and data services in Pretoria and Midrand have been restored. The disruption to our network was caused by a fibre break. We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”

At time of publication, Cell C said it was still waiting for a formal report, but could confirm it was a DFA fibre transmission problem.
