Cell C has restored network outages that affected its customers around Gauteng yesterday.
The mobile operator blamed the outage on hardware failure in one of its data centres as the cause of the problems.
Cell C is SA's third largest network with around 24 million subscribers. It also works as a mobile virtual network enabler for a number of local MVNOs, including FNB Connect, me&you mobile, Mr Price Mobile, Virgin Mobile and BokSel.
In a statement yesterday, the company said: "Cell C is aware of a problem affecting voice calls and SMS for customers in the South of Johannesburg from Alberton to Bedfordview, the East Rand including Benoni to Springs, and the Midrand area. Data is working normally.
"Cell C apologises for any inconvenience and we confirm that our engineers are urgently working on the problem. We will provide updates as and when they become available and thank our customers for their patience."
Later during the day, the mobile operator said: "Cell C can confirm that a problem caused by a hardware failure in one of our data centres affecting voice and SMS for some customers based in Johannesburg South, the East Rand and the Midrand areas was resolved just after 2pm.
"Full service to customers is restored. We thank our customers for their patience while our engineers worked on the problem and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused."
