Third mobile operator Cell C will roll out its high-speed HSPA+ network in the first major city in SA - Cape Town.

The operator has been rolling out the network city-by-city over the past month, beginning in Port Elizabeth, then Bloemfontein and, yesterday, East London.

The network will cover 80.5% of the population in East London, and Cell C has committed to 34% coverage of the entire South African population by the end of the year and 67% coverage by mid-2011.

Cell C CEO Lars Reichelt previously explained that Port Elizabeth was chosen as the first city, as the company considered it big enough to be a challenge, but not too big that it would be unmanageable.

Cape Town will be the first major city to receive access to the network, which will be unveiled tomorrow, and will likely be a true reflection of the network's capability.

The operator's new network is based on HSPA+ technology, and operates in the 900MHz and 2 100MHz frequency bands.

technology - which could be adapted for LTE or “anything else” in the future.

The mobile operator is offering two packages: a modem capable of speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and 2GB of per month, for a period of 12 months, for R1 499; and a modem capable of speeds of up to 21.6Mbps and 5GB of per month, for a period of 12 months, for R2 999.

The out of bundle rate is 39c per MB.
