Cell C has returned fire in the latest mobile war skirmish, undercutting Vodacom's recent 89c international rate promotion by 4c - and stripping SA's largest mobile operator of its "lowest international rate in SA" title.
Two days after Vodacom officially launched international call rates that undercut Cell C's signature tariff by 10c, of 89c per minute, Cell C has announced SA's new "lowest international call rate" of 85c per minute.
"Calls to 50 international destinations will now cost 85c per minute on per second billing for Cell C customers. Calls to both international mobile and fixed-line numbers will benefit from the 85c international calling promotional rate," said Cell C in a statement this morning.
Vodacom's promotion, set to run for just under three months, was launched on Monday for 52 international destinations. The promotion is an opt-in service, accompanied by a monthly fee of R5.
Cell C's statement differentiates the company's new offering from Vodacom's: "Cell C customers will not have to pay a monthly fee and don't need to opt-in (no catches, no restrictions, no fine print, no clauses... it's that simple!) to benefit from the lower call rate. All customers will automatically be charged the new lower rate of 85c when calling any of the countries included in the promotion." (sic)
Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig says - as promised - the operator has bettered its competition's response to Cell C's initial international 99c offering.
"We promised we would better the rate if our competition responded to our standard international call rate, and we have. Now, with the 85c promotion, Cell C customers can truly experience the lowest international call rate in SA from a mobile phone."
Cell C's latest promotion will also be available for about three months - starting on 28 October and ending on 31 January next year.
"It's during the holiday season that customers who have family and friends abroad would like to make contact most. We are pleased to be able to offer our customers the best possible rate in the market," says Knott-Craig.
