Cell C suffers network problems

Third mobile network provider Cell C is experiencing network problems that have left some subscribers without coverage.

The affected number ranges are 084 4, 084 5 and 084 8, says Cell C's executive head of corporate communications Shenanda Janse Van Rensburg. It is not known how many subscribers have been affected.

Media reports and e-mails from ITWeb readers indicate the problem began on Monday, around 1pm.

Cell C failed to respond to a media enquiry as to the source of the problem, or when it estimates the situation will be resolved. However, some reports indicate the problem could be due to a glitch in Cell C's home location register (HLR).

An HLR is a central database that contains details of each mobile phone subscriber that is authorised to use the GSM core network.

"Our engineers have been working throughout the night to resolve the problem. We will keep our customers updated regarding progress," says Janse Van Rensburg.
