Cell C will have over 4 300 outdoor and indoor sites live by the end of the year, says CEO Alan Knott-Craig.

Cell C plans to roll out an extra 100 cellphone sites in Johannesburg before December to increase capacity and improve quality.

This comes after consumer complaints and sub-standard performance in the Independent Communications Authority of SA's recent drive tests and quality of report.

The first 19 sites, says the operator, will be on air by the end of this month. Cell C currently has 959 base stations across the city.

Earmarked for additional sites in Johannesburg are - among others - Sandton, Fourways, Bryanston, Morningside, Soweto and Benoni.

Cell C will also build an additional 70 indoor coverage sites in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

"Traffic on our network has doubled over the past year and we've been hard at work rolling out new sites and installing additional capacity to cater for this growth and restore quality," says Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig.

He says the networks in Johannesburg and Pretoria have been taking the most strain. "In addition to the new sites, we have also embarked on a project to optimise close to 900 existing sites in Johannesburg and Pretoria to improve coverage and minimise interference on the network in high-density areas. We expect these activities to be completed by the end of November 2013."

Knott-Craig adds that Cell C will continue to roll out new sites, upgrade and optimise existing sites and add additional capacity across its network nationally. "By the end of 2013, Cell C would have 4 340 outdoor and indoor sites on air."

The company is also in discussions with Vodacom to implement seamless handover.
