Third mobile operator Cell C has unveiled a cloud-based mobile phone management tool that integrates voicemail, SMS and contact lists onto a personalised online profile.

MyTools was unveiled as a beta version to attendees of the Silicon Cape ICT networking event last night.

The service allows Cell C subscribers to manage calls and voicemail online by diverting unwanted calls straight to voicemail, or customising different voicemail recordings for specific contacts.

It also offers an online phone book, which will synchronise, over the air from any device, recent call history functionality and real-time call history updates.

According to Cell C, the service offers integration with social networking sites such as Facebook, allowing subscribers to share calls and messages with friends online. MyTools allows subscribers to forward voicemail via e-mail.

Speaking at the event last night, Cell C CEO Lars Reichelt explained that the future of mobile lies in its evolution into Web 2.0 functionality.

“New mobile services will become a mash-up of voice and online functionality.”

Reichelt noted that although the offering resembles the functionality offered by Google Voice, it was different in that MyTools is fully integrated into the Cell C network.

He stated that the service would be free to all Cell C subscribers and should be available within the next eight weeks.

“Your mobile phone is a personal tool and we should be able to personalise it to suit our lives,” concluded Reichelt.

To use this service, Cell C customers need to sign-up on an online VIP list on the Cell C Web site for MyTools (www.cellc.co.za/mytools), at no extra cost.
