The RF Group, importer of Nokia mobile phones, has launched an African languages initiative that makes South African language options available on Nokia cellphones.
Called Read-Easi, the concept brings the four most widely spoken South African languages to the Nokia 3310 cellphone.
Existing Nokia 3310s can be retro-fitted with Read-Easi at major Nokia customer care centres, while all new Nokia 3310s shipped from the factory will come with Read-Easi pre-installed. The Read-Easi language pack contains Zulu, Afrikaans, Sotho and Xhosa modules, in addition to English.
This programme will be extended in the next few months, when another new Nokia handset will ship with Read-Easi installed at the factory.
RF Group CEO Mike Myers describes Read-Easi as a first for the cellular industry. "Up to now, English was the only official South African language option on Nokia cellphones."
Myers says developing Read-Easi required input from translation experts and the factory in Finland, where Nokia is based, to ensure that the translated menus could be implemented within the parameters of the phone`s menu structure.
