Cortell presented a case study about implementing business intelligence (BI) for Aon, a large insurance company, at the ITWeb Business Intelligence Conference 2009.

Greg Bogiages, MD of Cortell Business Solutions, showed data from The Hackett Group about what world-class organisations do differently to others in terms of their BI.

He says many organisations still use Microsoft Excel for much of their reporting, but lack of an integrated environment “costs organisations in both effectiveness and efficiency”. Using spreadsheets as a primary budgeting tool leads to inaccuracies, he adds.

Bogiages cited research from The Hackett Group showing that 71% of world-class organisations enter their budgets onto a Web-based budgeting application, compared to 14% of their peers.

The analysts in world-class organisations also spend 30% of their time collecting and compiling data compared to analysing it, whereas the peer group analysts spent 50% of their time on the same task.

According to the data in Bogiages' presentation, world-class organisations tend to be more open with their reports internally, being more likely to have centralised data sources.
