Cequrux Technologies, headquartered in Cape Town and an expert in the provision of Internet and Internet-related security services, offers Sophos anti-virus scanning as an integrated function of its popular access control product, Cequrux Firewall, by adding virus scanning ability with SAV Interface.
Cequrux Firewall incorporates sophisticated graphical administration, accounting and logging tools for controlling and monitoring all network traffic entering or leaving an organisation. It is transparent to end-users and can be configured to prevent access to unauthorised Web sites or newsgroups, to restrict unsolicited e-mail and to block unwanted Java, ActiveX, banner adverts and VBS scripts.
When Cequrux decided to enhance its Cequrux Firewall software by adding virus detection capability, it looked at a number of options. The problem with the traditional method of adding this feature - by using a command line virus scanner - is that it is very slow, requiring repeated initialisation of the virus database and a large amount of memory. Cequrux chose SAVI (Sophos Anti-Virus Interface) as its solution because the SAVI architecture eliminates these constraints and provides a link to the powerful Sophos Anti-Virus virus detection engine.
To use Sophos Anti-Virus, Cequrux Firewall dynamically binds to the SAVI shared library at run time. This allows Cequrux Firewall to initialise its own copy of the Sophos virus detection engine which is able to delete or disinfect any virus found in e-mails or Internet downloads passing through the firewall. Using SAVI, Cequrux Firewall can react instantly to individual requests to scan files: no further initialisation and no command prompts are needed.
Sophos places virus identity files (IDEs) on its Web site for new in-the-wild viruses. Sophos customers can register to receive automatic e-mail notification whenever a new IDE is available. Cequrux Firewall users can, however, make the process even simpler by configuring Cequrux Firewall to intercept the e-mailed virus alerts. The IDEs are then automatically downloaded to provide fully up-to-date virus protection to all client machines.
Alan Barrett, CEO of Cequrux, says: "More and more of our Cequrux Firewall customers are choosing to use the integrated SAVI feature for e-mail virus blocking. This also gives them the peace of mind of knowing that they will be protected from new viruses within minutes of an announcement from Sophos."
Sophos Anti-Virus protection can also be extended to cover all servers and desktops, and Cequrux offers this as an optional additional level of protection for its customers.
"Cequrux`s selection of Sophos Anti-Virus technology is yet another endorsement of the quality of the Sophos virus protection," said Brett Myroff, CEO of local Sophos distributor, NetXactics. "We are always pleased to be able to work more closely with such innovative partners as Cequrux."
NetXactics is the local distributor for various IT and network security products and solutions. Product range includes: Sophos - Anti Virus and WebSpy - Internet Usage Monitoring and Management software.
