Changing of the guard at SITA

Johannesburg, 05 Aug 2005

Minister for public and administration, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, has officially welcomed the new State IT Agency (SITA) board of directors.

The contracts of the previous board expired at the end of July.

In a statement issued this week, Fraser-Moleketi welcomed the incoming board, chaired by Thenjiwe Chikane. The non-executive members are Nirvani Dhevcharran, Llewellyn Jones, Tshilidzi Marwala, Nokhana Moerane, Peter Pedlar, Zodwa Manase and Noedine Isaacs-Mpulo.

The previous board, which was chaired by Zodwa Manase, included Lucy Abrahams, Leah Gcabashe, Coen Kruger, Mike Roussos and Sibusiso Sibisi.

The minister thanked the outgoing directors for their work, saying that when the board assumed its responsibilities on 1 June 2002, SITA was experiencing financial losses and receiving qualified audit reports from the Auditor-General.

"This was a time characterised by high turnovers in top management and among professional staff."

"Over the past three years, the board has lifted the organisation out of an era of instability and uncertainty and steered it through transformation processes to a point where it has now achieved a definitive turnaround," she said.

Fraser-Moleketi said the outgoing board had appointed a new management team of committed executives led by Mavuso Msimang as the CEO and this had greatly helped to restore confidence in, and the credibility of, the organisation.

"SITA's business systems have noticeably improved. Under the guidance of the board, SITA has developed a number of strategic interventions that are underpinned by a commitment to raise the quality of service delivery and the use of ICT to lower government's cost of doing business."

The minister cited as examples of SITA's progress the restructuring of the Procurement Services centre, which had reduced the time taken to award tenders from 240 to 90 days.
