Unisys Corporation today announced a contract worth more than $4.4 million for the new terminal building of Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA), China`s largest airport, to implement the Unisys Airport Passenger Processing System (APPS). With APPS, agents at BCIA can improve departure control procedures, provide more personalized customer service to passengers, increase efficiency, and decrease staff training time.
China`s aviation industry is already one of the fastest growing in the world. The Beijing Capital International Airport Expansion Project should be completed in October of 1999. The airport is expected to handle more than 10,000 passengers an hour during peak times after expansion. APPS will put intuitive Windows-type graphical screens at BCIA agents` fingertips, enabling them - with minimal training - to check-in passengers and baggage and complete reservations and departure control processes more quickly and efficiently.
"By implementing the Unisys Airport Passenger Processing System, we intend to deliver world-class customer service and improve on-time flight departures " said Haung Gang, Assistant General Manager of Beijing Capital International Airport.
BCIA will implement a major portion of the APPS product suite, including the Check-in Assistant, Local Check-In Assistant, Boarding Control Assistant, and Load Planning Assistant solutions. Unisys will customize APPS to meet the operational requirements for the Beijing Capital International Airport, including designing and implementing the complete network and supplying work stations and special airline printers, such as automated ticket and boarding pass (ATB), bag tag and gate readers.
Implementation of APPS at BCIA is scheduled to begin in September 1998. Currently, Air China is using APPS at the existing terminal building of BCIA.
"As one of the most prestigious airports in the world, Beijing Capital International Airport will be a worldwide APPS showcase," said Bruce Wheat, vice president of Operations Management Systems, Unisys Worldwide Transportation. "The capability of APPS to interface with other airport systems will convert the check-in, boarding, and departure procedures into more passenger-friendly and time-effective processes. This contract is another milestone in the long-standing 13-year relationship between the Civil Aviation Administration of China and Unisys."
