Chinese govt starts RFID project

Cybra has struck a deal with the People's Republic of China and Key West Technologies to develop smart shipping containers utilising RFID technology, reports IT Jungle.

As part of the deal, the parties will form a new company called Beijing Smart Shipping Technologies that will develop solutions for improving the tracking of Chinese maritime commerce.

Key West CEO Jim Davis, says: "China will very likely continue to lead the world in exports for some time and we hope that through our combined efforts, the joint venture will have a leadership role in end-to-end supply chain tracking, monitoring, and management.”

VeriChip wins $10m RFID deal

US-based VeriChip, a company which creates human-implantable RFID microchips, has entered into a $10 million-agreement with Optimus Technology, states BusinessWire.

VeriChip is set to use the funds to develop a virus triage detection system for the H1N1 virus and a glucose-sensing RFID microchip.

Earlier this month, VeriChip acquired Steel Vault to form PositiveID. The new company will provide identification technologies and tools to protect consumers and businesses.

iPhone app unlocks car

Car rental service Zipcar has rolled out an iPhone application which helps users find nearby vehicles, make reservations from their iPhone and unlock their hired car's doors from their handhelds, says Venture Beat.

Using an RFID-enabled membership card, users can reserve a car online and unlock it by tapping the membership car on the windscreen or activating the iPhone application.

The company operates in 25 cities in the US and the iPhone application is available from the Apple App Store for free to Zipcar members.
