Chinese Institute of Engineers awards Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs President Jeong Kim Lifetime Achievement Award

Paris, 24 Feb 2009

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that Dr Jeong Kim, President of Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, has been named recipient of the 2009 Chinese Institute of Engineers (USA) Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award recognises Asian-American engineering professionals with a record of significant personal achievements, contributions to academia, public service and industry. Previous honourees have included Nobel Prize winners, leading professors, and corporate leaders.

In accepting the Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr Kim expressed the hope that he “would join past recipients as a beacon for the aspirations of young Asians inclined to pursue engineering and provide the direction that will help enable them to achieve success in their chosen professions”.

As President of Bell Labs, Dr Kim oversees a world-renowned research institution that is the innovation engine for Alcatel-Lucent and the source for groundbreaking solutions that shape the communications industry.

Dr Kim's career spans industry, academia and military service. Prior to his current position, he was a professor at the University of Maryland, President of Lucent Technologies' Optical Group, and Chairman and CEO of a hi-tech communications equipment company that he founded and eventually sold to Lucent Technologies. Earlier in his career, Dr Kim held technical and leadership roles in the fields of computers, satellite systems, data communications and was a nuclear submarine officer in the US Navy.

Dr Kim, a member of the National Academies of Engineering, holds a PhD in reliability engineering from the University of Maryland, a master's degree in Technical Management and bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is conferred annually by the Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA in conjunction with the celebration of National Engineer Week.
