Cisco and Citrix Systems have rolled out a desktop virtualisation solution that the companies say will make deployment of virtual desktops and applications across large enterprises easier.
The Cisco Desktop Virtualisation Solution with Citrix XenDesktop combines Cisco unified computing and Citrix XenDesktop.
James McNab, Citrix's senior director for sales development and marketing, Europe, Middle East and Africa, explains that the decision to deploy the joint solution stemmed from the demand from customers.
“The partnership between Citrix and Cisco is sending out a message that desktop virtualisation is becoming mainstream in the industry. The demand for desktop virtualisation is ultimately being driven by customers looking to market leaders to implement virtualisation and scale up in an effective way.”
According to Citrix, desktop virtualisation is rapidly growing in popularity as a flexible way to deliver Windows desktops and applications to business users in any location, using any device.
The virtualisation solutions provider explains that enterprises that are looking to deploy desktop virtualisation are looking for simple and scalable solutions that integrate software, hardware and provide support.
“It is the only solution that integrates hardware, software and support in a single unified offering that's easy to deploy and can rapidly scale up to thousands of users within an organisation.”
McNab points out 2010 marks a time when many organisations are looking for a cost-effective way of replacing their ageing desktop environments. He explains that enterprises are migrating existing operating systems to Windows 7.
He says: “One of the major benefits of desktop virtualisation is that it enables an organisation to get out of the costly spiral of renewing their IT environments every time they want to move to a new operating system. Desktop virtualisation will work regardless of what end-user device or operating system it's on.”
McNab adds that after six months in interoperability testing with Cisco, the solution is available to the South African market.
