giant Cisco has a dominant share of the South African networking infrastructure market.

This is according to the results of the ITWeb-Business Connexion Networking Infrastructure Survey, which ran online for 14 days, attracting 153 respondents.

The majority of the respondents (56.85%) revealed that they are using Cisco's infrastructure. This was followed by HP, used by 30.82%; IBM (13.7%); Juniper (10.96%); and Siemens (2.74%).

The survey also asked respondents to name the devices their networking infrastructure connects to. Most organisations (95.21%) pointed to servers, while 84.25% listed printers. Mobile devices followed at 54.11%.

In the event of a failure, the majority of respondents (47.95%) said they would want core services restored as a matter of urgency, with e-mail receiving preference (30.82%).

Interestingly, when the respondents were asked if they would consider having a third party host part of or their entire infrastructure, 46.55% said 'no' with only 25.86% saying 'yes'. The rest were unsure.

They were also asked if a third-party financing option is a consideration when procuring new infrastructure. While most (45.26%) said 'no', 32.85% said 'yes'.

Most businesses (67.12%) are also happy with the quality of service they are receiving in respect to application response time. However, 28.77% said they are dissatisfied.

Asked if their current networking infrastructure is able to implement a cloud solution, the majority (30.66%) indicated that, although they are in a position to implement such a solution, they have not done so. Meanwhile, 27.74% said they have already implemented one, with 10.95% saying they are in the process of implementing one.

The biggest concern regarding organisations' networking infrastructure is accidental disclosure of confidential information, as selected by 43.07% of respondents.

Potential theft or loss of mobile devices and the data on them (19.71%) was the second-biggest worry, followed by management of mobile devices (14.60%) and a lack of device security policies (10.22%).
