CKS gets KBSI agency

Johannesburg, 20 Sep 1999

CyberKnowledge Systems (CKS) has been awarded the agency for Knowledge Based Systems Inc (KBSI), an analysis, modelling and systems software development company based in Texas, US. KBSI has been instrumental in the development and formulation of the international Integrated Definition Language (IDEF) modelling methodologies, techniques and tools which CKS can now offer South African organisations.

"These tools are particularly appropriate for the SA market because they allow processes to be defined in accordance with the IDEF standard," says the MD of CKS, Mohamed Madhi. "This helps to benchmark performance against the best in the world. The IDEF standard also highlights the need to match skills with processes and to develop a knowledge management ." Pretoria-based CKS specialises in IT services, knowledge management, project management and strategy formulation.

Madhi maintains the KBSI set of modelling tools is one of the few process modelling tools based on scientific methods, and which have been developed jointly by universities and the IT industry. "These tools allow CKS, which has also been made one of KBSI`s strategic international partners, to rapidly and cost effectively understand the client`s overall business." From the clients` perspectives, Madhi says, the tools allow them to model all their operations and processes and then use this information to determine the following:

.         the skills they need in the organisation;

.         the most effective structure for the organisation;

.         a cost model of the organisation;

.         the required roles and project responsibilities across the organisation.

Madhi says making these tools and services available to the South African market is particularly important for CKS, since many large organisations, including TransNet, Denel, Telkom, Eskom, the Defence Force, and several manufacturing companies have used the IDEF standard".

KBSI, founded in 1988, is renowned for its excellence in turning research results into commercial technologies, notably software products. A broad spectrum of technology and application areas have benefited from KBSI`s work, including artificial intelligence, expert systems, geometric reasoning, computer-aided design, manufacturing and business process engineering.

KBSI has also developed a tool set for business process re-engineering (BPR) which has built-in software extensibility to allow conceptual models to be built and implemented as real business processes.

Its approach allows users to concentrate on the process of developing through interventions with business domain experts, rather than concentrating on the manipulation of the tool itself.

KBSI`s experts have fulfilled contracts with government and commercial organisations including the US Air Force, the US Navy, the National Science Foundation and the Chrysler Foundation.

KBSI currently markets 11 software products and provides tools, training and consulting for enterprises. These include business process analysis, project and cost management, activity based costing, process and modelling, discrete event simulation, workflow optimisation and functional analysis.
