CMS`s L180 tape library targeted at mid-market

Johannesburg, 04 Apr 2000

CMS, a division of MGX Holdings and local StorageTek the representative, has announced the immediate availability of the StorageTek L180 Tape Library.

The L180 allows mid-size businesses to take advantage of the advanced information management capabilities of StorageTek tape libraries, including support for mixed media, flexible interface options, scalability, robotics and high-availability features.

In combination with the recently announced StorageTek 9840 Channel tape drive, the L180 tape library is the first SAN-ready all-native Fibre Channel tape solution. End-to-end Fibre Channel solutions allow distance extension and drive sharing across many Unix and Windows NT servers, enabling businesses to and share data faster and more simply.

"By accommodating multiple tape technologies, StorageTek`s L180 tape library will provide users more flexibility than ever before," says Bob Amatruda, senior analyst, tape and removable storage at IDC. "The L180 will allow StorageTek to capitalise on the explosive growth in the midrange tape automation market."

StorageTek`s Adaptive Media Technology allows tape drives attached to the L180 to be configured for current and future application needs of the business, using any combination of StorageTek`s 9840 tape drives or DLT drives. The L180 also is designed to support SuperDLT and LTO Ultrium when these technologies are available. When used with the mid-point-load 9840 or 9840FC tape drives, the L180 becomes a mission-critical tool for holding digital text, video clips, X-rays, check images, e-business data and other important, frequently accessed information.

"Although mid-size businesses struggle with the same storage issues as large enterprises, some have yet to realise the benefits of automation because, until now, there were few options in appropriately sized and priced technologies," says Pieter Engelbrecht, product marketing manager at CMS. "The L180 is the first to offer the storage capabilities of enterprise-sized solutions in a smaller footprint, with up to seven terabytes of data capacity."

The L180 library is the first in the industry with a native network port and built-in Web server. The Web-based library management capabilities of the L180 tape library offer real-time library monitoring from anywhere, at anytime. The L180 also utilises StorageTek`s 4D Robotics, the fastest tape automation in the industry. Integrated rack space accommodates additional components such as Fibre Channel to SCSI bridges, routers and SAN gateways, making the L180 a truly scalable and flexible solution.

StorageTek`s L180 Tape Library provides capacity of up to seven terabytes (uncompressed) and is targeted at the Unix and Windows NT marketplaces for midrange, open systems implementations. It supports up to 10 DLT drives or six 9840 drives, or a combination of both.
