Cognos cited as 'visionary` company in new analyst report on corporate performance management

Cognos metrics manager latest example of company`s CPM vision in action
Johannesburg, 15 Oct 2002

Cognos, the world leader in (), today announced it has been cited as a "visionary" company in Gartner`s new Corporate Performance Management (CPM) Suites Magic Quadrant. The Magic Quadrant is an analysis tool Gartner uses to describe the strengths and vulnerabilities of vendors within specific markets and domains.

CPM is an umbrella term that describes the methodologies, metrics, processes and systems used to monitor and an enterprise`s business performance. Cognos has embraced CPM as the future of the BI market as organisations look to align business strategy with execution across the enterprise. Cognos was the first BI vendor to deliver a comprehensive framework for CPM (http://www.cognos.com/news/releases/2002/0916_2.html), and this week launched Cognos Metrics Manager, a breakthrough scorecarding solution that enables organisations to actively monitor, analyse and report at every level of the business (http://www.cognos.com/news/releases/2002/1007.html).

"Being ranked a visionary by an analyst firm such as Gartner is further confirmation of our momentum in the corporate performance management space," said Dave Laverty, senior vice-president of marketing at Cognos. "Cognos is unique among BI vendors in its ability to deliver a comprehensive solution that enables the entire management cycle - planning, budgeting, reporting, analysis and scorecarding."

The analytical metrics for the CPM Magic Quadrants encompass vendor viability, functionality, technology, and service and support. In addition, to these standard metrics, Gartner has expanded on the functionality to support the definition of CPM, and there are a number of criteria unique to CPM suites. Vendors need to specifically address these criteria to qualify for the Magic Quadrant and to compete for a favourable spot within it. According to Gartner, visionaries have a clear vision of market direction and are focused on preparing for that, but they can still improve in terms of optimising service delivery.
