Cognos, the world leader in business intelligence (BI), has continued its climb up the global rankings, earning an elevated position in Gartner`s January 2003 Business Intelligence Magic Quadrant.
Gartner`s Magic Quadrant assigns rankings to companies based on their completeness of vision and ability to execute. Gartner defines leaders as vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction, and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.
Gartner helped establish the vision and direction for CPM (corporate performance management), which Cognos is driving to fulfilment, says David McWilliam, MD of Cognos Africa. "Companies across the world, and many in SA, are embracing CPM as the best way in which to manage their affairs, and Gartner`s endorsement of Cognos underscores both the company`s and its clients` vision for CPM."
CPM has come to be recognised as the optimal way in which companies organise their activities, embracing planning, budgeting and forecasting, modelling, reporting and analysis, monitoring and the balanced scorecard.
"All of these activities are driven off a single view of the truth," concludes McWilliam, "which ensures the entire organisation is in synch. It is this requirement that is making CPM attractive for companies which have grasped the vision."
To boost its capabilities in this realm, Cognos recently acquired CPM specialist Adaytum for $160 million, a transaction which will help propel the company further up Gartner`s Magic Quadrant.
