Cognos Series 7 gets top billing in SPEX BI review

Cognos has earned the top rating in the SPEX comparative product review. SPEX, a division of Meta Group, tested Cognos for functionality, usability, and overall technology and market strength, along with six other business intelligence solutions, including Crystal, Brio, MicroStrategy, Hyperion, IBI and Actuate.

According to the evaluation summary, "Cognos Series 7 offers users a complete business intelligence platform and is one of the most functionally complete solutions evaluated. Its specific areas of strength include navigation and analysis, query functionality, and modelling features. Also, by using a shared and well defined set of metrics it can monitor, analyse and report metrics at every level of a business and it can measure execution against across all departments."

The SPEX review also highlighted the Cognos Series 7 integrated framework, simplified installation and centralised administration console. Cognos achieved nearly perfect scores for functionality and usability at 4.7 and 4.8 respectively out of a possible 5 score. The company scored an overall 4.58, the highest ranking in the 2002 business intelligence report. The SPEX measure is Meta Group`s independent evaluation of the features and functionality of a specific technology sector.
