Johannesburg, 09 Feb 2000

Cognos, the leading strategic vendor of enterprise () solutions for e-business, has announced its intention to port its software to the Linux operating system. With this announcement, Cognos reaffirmed its commitment to provide its customers the broadest possible choice of platforms for e-business. Cognos recognizes that Linux--because of its flexibility and availability--is part of the computing infrastructure customers are considering when building enterprise-scale, Internet-based, e-business applications.

Companies today are transforming the way they their business processes by embracing e-business and the flexibility of the Web. The organizations that are leading the way are looking to development environments such as Windows, UNIX and now Linux to handle Web server components of their distributed e-business applications. Cognos helps customers by providing integrated enterprise business intelligence solutions across all of their e-business applications, operating systems and data sources. Cognos business intelligence solutions are currently available on Windows and three UNIX platforms. Specific plans for adaptation and release of Linux versions of Cognos solutions will be finalized in the coming months.

"Linux is emerging as a very real option for organizations who want the flexibility to choose the most appropriate operating system for development of Web-based applications," said Terry Hall, Cognos` chief operating officer. "A number of our customers are evaluating Linux and have recognized that Linux is a potential operating system for Internet-based, e-business applications. Customers are looking to strategic vendors, such as Cognos, to provide the flexibility to run their applications on all their Internet platforms of choice."

"The addition of Linux-based products to Cognos` software portfolio is a real advantage, giving customers the opportunity to choose the best solution for their particular needs," said Sandy Carter, director of PartnerWorld for Developers, IBM Netfinity. "IBM and Cognos have worked to ensure that our hardware and software work together seamlessly. Through its continued participation in the ServerProven Solutions Program, Cognos customers have the assurance that Netfinity servers will be a key platform supporting their Linux endeavors."

"Informix was the first company to ship a commercial database on Linux. With over 300,000 copies now in customer hands, the market is ripe to tap the information stored in these databases," said Charlie Chang, Informix senior vice president of business intelligence. "Cognos` adoption of Linux means this platform becomes even more mainstream and provides new opportunities for customers supporting critical e-business operations."

"Cognos is at the confluence of three fast flowing markets: Linux for server-based applications; enterprise business intelligence; and e-business," said Philip Russom, director of data warehousing and business intelligence at Hurwitz Group. "Developers have been dipping their toes into the Linux stream for some time, because the operating system is optimized for Web-based applications. However, organizations need their e-business applications to run on Linux before they can dive in and take full advantage of the operating system. With this announcement, Cognos is helping customers expand their e-business platform choices."
