Cognos, a business intelligence (BI) and corporate performance management vendor, has launched Cognos 8 BI, providing a range of BI functionality on a single Web services-based architecture, the company says.
An evolution of the Series 7, the group says it assists in transforming departmental BI into an enterprise-standard solution.
It meets the needs of a broad range of users with a single product, says Cognos SA MD David McWilliam.
According to Forrester Research, "companies are looking for a way to reduce the number of redundant BI platforms, and the best way to do that is to standardise on fewer integrated platforms that can support multiple BI reporting and analysis categories".
There are few BI and platform vendors that can deliver various reporting solutions on a single platform. "Cognos 8 BI has raised the bar for how BI platforms must be capable of being integrated with the rest of the technology assets in a services-oriented environment," says Forrester.
Cognos says data access is a major concern in the BI arena, which is why extended open data access capabilities are important. These allow a complete range of BI functionality including reporting, analysis, dashboarding, scorecarding and event management, to be performed against any organisational data, relational or online analytical processing.
Enhancements include the ability to apply compound filters, nest subsets of information and perform comparative analysis.
The package allows the performance of the corporation to be monitored and measured with both user and administrative capabilities, says McWilliam.
The on-demand release will take place at the end of next month, while February next year will see the general availability of the package as well as available upgrades and migrations for existing customers.
