Commerce One, SalesBid form new joint venture company

Johannesburg, 09 Jun 2000

SalesBid, provider of outsourced dynamic commerce solutions, today announced its intention to form a joint venture company with Commerce One South Africa (Distributor Operations) focused on the small-to-medium (SME) enterprise market. Commerce One South Africa is the regional host for Commerce One Inc.'s regional MarketSite in southern Africa. Commerce One, Inc, is the leader in global e-commerce solutions for business.

The new company will provide access for SalesBid's online communities to Commerce One's MarketSite. Commerce One's MarketSite hosts corporate buyers and sellers in a real-time, dynamic, on-line trading environment. The Commerce One MarketSite Portal Solution is the world's first open standards infrastructure which enables businesses to first create and deploy a business-to-business trading portal, then develop and sell value-added e-commerce services in an open framework.

In addition, the connection and interoperability with other MarketSite portals around the world will enhance the benefits to Commerce One and SalesBid customers, increasing as more and more participants gain access to Commerce One's Global Trading Web.

Derek Lubner, Commerce One South Africa marketing director says: "We see great potential to grow e-commerce trade in the South African market and have chosen to partner with SalesBid because of its ability to provide cutting edge e-commerce technology to enable small-to-medium size businesses to trade online.

"Our companies have a strong synergy in that Commerce One's MarketSite will be the dominant business-to-business trading infrastructure in South Africa, while SalesBid's strength is catering for small-to-medium sized enterprises. Commerce One South Africa is focused on bringing large corporates onto the MarketSite through its procurement solution, BuySite. MarketSite connects multiple buyers and sellers together to facilitate electronic procurement."

Rael Levitt, CEO of SalesBid, says the new company will enable SalesBid's clients to enjoy the benefits of accessing both local and international corporations via Commerce One's Global Trading Web (GTW) while at the same time enabling Commerce One's clients to trade with a large number of smaller businesses.

"Companies accessing the Commerce One MarketSite will be able to view the supplier catalogues, from applicable vendors in the SalesBid ."

Levitt adds that the SME market is a powerful force that is often overlooked due to these businesses' fragmented nature and geographical barriers. "However, by means of this new partnership, all companies, both big and small, have access to a real virtual marketplace, where buyers and suppliers can trade through a single point via the ."

Commerce One's large corporate clients include Shell, British Telecommunications (BT), Boeing, and General Motors in the international market as well as Sasol in the South African Market.
