Compaq achieves number one RAS ranking, says DH Brown

Johannesburg, 03 Aug 2001

Compaq Computer Corporation has announced that it has achieved the number one ranking in composite Cluster and Single System High Availability RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability) in a recent report issued by DH Brown Associates, Inc, a leading research and consulting firm that provides strategic analysis of technologies, products and market trends in the information industry.

In a two-part study conducted by DH Brown Associates, which looked at features and functions as well as cluster and disaster recovery capabilities, Compaq`s overall composite score was 79.8% out of a possible 100%, followed by IBM at 76.2% and Sun at 73.6%.

Compaq`s top ranking underscores its unique ability to supply solutions to customers requiring the highest levels of availability and scalability now and in the future.

Compaq technology used in the study was its Tru64 Unix operating system with TruCluster Server software on an AlphaServer GS320 hardware system, and Compaq StorageWorks (EMA12000).

Harvey Hindin, Vice President, Director, High Availability & Clusters Service DH Brown Associates, said: "Validating their ability to supply customers an infrastructure enabling the highest levels of availability, Compaq`s evaluated product set, including the Tru64 Unix operating system, TruCluster Server software, an AlphaServer GS320 and a StorageWorks Enterprise Modular Array, ranked first overall in the DH Brown Associates, Inc two-part study on open systems high availability features and functions.

"Particularly significant," Hindin added, "is Compaq`s number one position in hardware and software RAID/Storage support, based on the StorageWorks EMA12000 and Tru64 Unix Volume Manager, ensuring availability of data in the event of a disk-drive failure. In part one of the study published in March 2000, Compaq placed first, distinguishing itself with the advanced clustering capabilities provided by Tru64 Unix and TruCluster Server software."

With customers today demanding and requiring 24x7 availability, total reliability, and extensive serviceability and scalability for their e-business solutions, this study validates Compaq`s Tru64 Unix clustering leadership capabilities. Compaq Tru64 Unix simplifies the administration of clusters by offering a unique single file system with shared root that enables customers to achieve high availability with significantly reduced management effort.

"This outstanding result is further confirmation of Compaq`s leadership in providing the Unix scalability and availability that enterprise customers are demanding, and demonstrates the significant investment Compaq is putting into maintaining a number one position for Tru64 Unix," said Rich Marcello, Vice President and General Manager of Compaq`s High Performance Systems Group.

"When combined with our recent announcement of a new, long-term roadmap for Tru64 Unix, it provides a compelling reason for customers to buy Tru64 Unix today and into the future."

All of the industry-leading high performance features, functionality, and clustering capabilities of Tru64 Unix on Alpha today will also be available on Intel`s Itanium architecture in the future, providing a clear and stable path for customers and ISVs. Customers taking advantage of the leadership Tru64 Unix features today have the assurance that these features will continue to be available in the future.

Details of the study In part one of the study which looked at Unix Cluster Functionality and contributed 65% to the overall score, Compaq ranked first in Cluster Single-System Image, Cluster Concurrent Database Access, and Cluster High-Availability Administration, and ranked second in Cluster Back-up and Recovery.

In part two of the study, which looked at Single-System High Availability and contributed 35% to the overall score, Compaq placed second overall, and achieved one first place (Hardware & Software RAID/Storage). Compaq`s lead in supporting RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) is particularly impressive since Compaq`s StorageWorks product supported all of the functions evaluated in the hardware-based RAID section. Compaq also scored two second places for (In-System Online Service and In-System Failure Avoidance).
