Compaq not set to go direct, asserts Tarsus Technologies

Johannesburg, 29 Feb 2000

Amid swirling rumours that Compaq is set to go the route of competitors such as Dell Computer and sell directly, Tarsus Technologies has stepped forward to clarify the situation from a distributor`s perspective.

"Compaq has always provided great support for its channel partners and does a lot to maintain the relationships it has with these partners," declares Andre Wollheim, business manager for Compaq at Tarsus Technologies.

According to Wollheim, Compaq has a particularly strong reseller base in South Africa and has no plans to adopt the direct route. He does, however, observe that the company sells direct to only a select few blue-chip clients - and for good reason. "Compaq has a number of clients in this country to whom it sells directly; this is due to the simple fact that the equipment being used by these clients is extremely focused and the support available in this country for that type of hardware is not available," explains Wollheim.

In conclusion, Wollheim reveals that Compaq has set up a complete CRM call centre with 30 operators to support its South African resellers. "Clearly this indicates that Compaq has every intention of maintaining the good relationships it has established with the channel," he says.
