Compaq Computer is set to regain its position as the top selling PC brand in the US and around the world. This is according to Andre Wollheim, business manager for Compaq at Tarsus Technologies, the distribution arm of MB Technologies.
"The indications are that Dell is losing its momentum particularly in the SMME market space, leaving the top place open for Compaq to fill," he declares.
Compaq was toppled from a lengthy lead in the US desktop market by Dell Computer. However, Dell has lost momentum and is losing market share back to Compaq. "The reason for this is that, while it is easy to score big gains from a small base, it is a lot more difficult to sustain those gains from a larger base," explains Wollheim.
According to Wollheim, Compaq will return to the top with an aggressive pricing structure as well as the marque`s reputation for quality and support. "Compaq has already bounced back in the States, coming in ahead of Dell as the best selling desktop in recent months," he says.
In terms of servers, Compaq is still recording excellent sales, even in the face of increasing white box offerings. 'While many other branded machines have taken quite a knock from white box servers - which offer VARs better margins - it is significant that only Compaq still holds its own," he concludes.
