CompTIA announces Linux+ Certification

Johannesburg, 21 Jul 2000

CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, has announced that it will add a Linux certification to its existing suite of vendor-neutral certification programs.

CompTIA is a world renowned developer of standards for the converging computing and communications market, with existing A+, +, Certified Document Imaging Architech and i-Net+ certifications.

"The industry asked CompTIA to develop Linux+ based on our tremendous record of success in certification development," says Adrian Schofield, International Sales & Marketing Director for CompTIA. "Sair Linux was the first company to make the commitment to join CompTIA in the development of Linux+. Partnering with the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) and Sair, CompTIA will bring Caldera and other major industry vendors and customers together to create a globally accepted benchmark certification for Linux. Growth rates are being fueled by ASPs and ISPs which are using it as a cost-effective web server/application server platform. We expect Linux+ to be the entry point for a number of higher level Linux certification programs."

"Caldera Systems and its OpenLearning Program enthusiastically support this initiative to provide industry-wide baseline Linux+ certification," says Steven R. Wright, OpenLearning Program Manager. "Caldera Systems is the leader in the development, deployment and management of Linux-based specialized servers and Internet-access devices which extend the eBusiness infrastructure. We believe that offering a baseline Linux+ certification through CompTIA will broaden the interest in and availability of Linux training and certification in the industry," he says.

"We believe in the value of certification standards that are independent of both software vendors and training providers and see this new entry-level Linux+ program as an excellent pathway for newcomers to Linux, especially if they are coming from a Windows environment," says Dan York, president of the Linux Professional Institute. "We recognize the business opportunities for Linux as an OS option and the crucial role that training standards and skills benchmarks will play in ensuring adoption of Linux. We look forward to seeing Linux+ grow the pool of people who can support this emerging community," he says.

"The Linux+ initiative represents the industry`s recognition of the value of free-to-use, open source software," says Tobin Maginnis, president of Sair Linux. "This collective effort demonstrates the acceptance of shared intellectual property as a model for software professionals. The demand for certified Linux and GNU IT professionals is growing at an incredible rate, and the industry has demanded an entry-level certification. CompTIA has proven its leadership in certification and is the most capable umbrella organization to provide the industry with an entry-level Linux certification."

CompTIA expects a high level of interest and additional significant partnerships as Linux+ development gets underway. Linux+ certification is expected to launch in the first half of 2001.
