CompTIA has announced that the current Network+ examination is to be replaced by a new version in January 2002.
Network+ is a CompTIA vendor-neutral certification that measures the technical knowledge of networking professionals with 18 to 24 months experience in the IT industry. Earning the Network+ certification means that the candidate possesses the knowledge needed to configure and install the TCP/IP client.
"After extensive discussions with SMEs, response received from surveys, as well as feedback from professionals who passed the exam, CompTIA has decided to revise the test," says Adrian Schofield, CompTIA`s international sales and marketing director.
He explains that the new Network+ exam objectives will cover current technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet, optical connectors and wireless protocols. Additionally, experience-based topics such as troubleshooting will have a bigger focus.
According to Schofield, there will be an overlap between the old and new exams. "The revised exam will be launched in January 2002, after which there will probably be a 90-day grace period during which students can choose to write either the old or new exam.
"We expect the new objectives to remain current until March/June 2003, when they will again be replaced with another, newer version," he says.
The new Network+ text books will start appearing on the shelves by September/October 2001.
Since its launch in April 1999, about 50 000 Network+ exams have been issued worldwide. "In SA, we expect to surpass 75 000 exams before the end of 2001," Schofield concludes.
