CompTIA stands firm to protect its intellectual property

In a bid to protect its members and install a high level of credibility within the training arena, CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, is taking a strong stance to protect its trademarks and logos.

The campaign has already entered a vital stage in which non-members are being consulted on legally enforceable regulations pertaining to logos and certification trademarks such as A+, Server+, I-Net+, Jobs+, Network+, CDIA+, CTT+, Linux+ and IT Project+.

CompTIA has clear rules relating to the use of its trademark name, logos and certifications. As an example, one clause states that neither members nor non-members may offer or advertise a "local" or "internal" or "South African" examination or test towards any CompTIA certification. Training Centres may also not issue internal certificates using any CompTIA logos or trademarks. This means that an XYZ Training Centre`s certificate stating that the student attended/completed an "A+ certification course", is in contravention of the authorised use of CompTIA trademarks.

On the one hand, this helps people to establish whether or not they have been certified to international standards with a recognised real CompTIA "plus" certification and thus prevent further exploitation. At the same time it provides employers with guidelines that simplify their employment selection process.

Non-members may also not use any CompTIA certification logos on any marketing material, nor may they use any of CompTIA`s trademark names as titles for courses offered.

"CompTIA`s trademarks have been used to exploit individuals for far too long. As the voice of the ICT industry, we are taking a strong stance against unauthorised use of our trademarks in an effort to help clean up the industry," explains CompTIA sales and marketing executive, Loraine Vorster.
