Johannesburg, 21 May 1999

Computer Associates International (CA) and SuSE Holding AG (SuSE), Europe`s leading Linux distributor, have announced a wide-ranging agreement to expand the adoption of Linux in enterprise computing environments throughout Europe.

Under terms of the agreement, SuSE will bundle and distribute CA`s Unicenter TNG Framework and associated management APIs with its SuSE Linux CD at no charge to clients. SuSE will also promote CA`s Unicenter TNG as the management solution of choice for its rapidly growing Linux customer base.

CA, in turn, will include a free copy of SuSE Linux on Unicenter TNG Framework CDs distributed in Europe, and will promote SuSE as a trusted source of Linux code and support services for its European clients.

"The value proposition of Linux has a strong appeal across European corporate markets," says Robin Bloor, chief executive officer of Bloor Research, a UK-based IT software research company dedicated to the evaluation and comparative analysis of commercial software technology. "The take-up of Linux is very strong and where it is deployed extensively it will need an enterprise management capability. The agreement between CA and SuSE helps these corporate buyers tap into the power of Linux in a way that meets their needs for effective management and support."

This agreement continues and extends CA`s strong support for global clients across all business computing platforms and furthers SuSE`s goal to maximize the value proposition of Linux as a platform for business-critical applications and enterprise-class solutions.

"We are excited to partner with Computer Associates, the undisputed leader in enterprise management software," said Ronald Dyroff, chief executive officer, SuSE Holding AG. "Unicenter TNG and its Framework give our users the ability to deploy highly reliable and manageable Linux-based business solutions, setting the stage for expanded wide-scale adoption of Linux in the enterprise market."

CA and SuSE announced this agreement during CA`s Ventures in Partnership Symposium, an invitation-only event in Marbella, Spain.

"CA has a clearly demonstrated and unequivocal commitment to the Linux operating system, which is rapidly growing in Europe and throughout the rest of the world," says Ken Farber, CA senior vice president of strategic business alliances. "Through this agreement, CA is forging closer ties with the strategically important community of European Linux users and, by extension, strengthening CA`s already-established leadership position as the enterprise management solution of choice for the worldwide corporate Linux user base."

The companies also plan further joint marketing and technical activities.

Linux

Linux is the cooperatively developed POSIX-oriented, multi-user, multitasking operating system used worldwide. Linux is strongly differentiated from virtually all other operating systems because it is "open source" software, with the source code freely available to all users. Unlike binary-only operating systems that restrict access to the source code, Linux benefits from a worldwide community of highly experienced programmers and technically savvy academics who have the access to enhance and improve the system. Linux is used as an exceptional-value, fully functional Unix workstation for Internet servers and other applications.

Unicenter TNG Framework

The Unicenter TNG Framework is the only framework to provide "out-of-the-box" support for a broad range of hardware platforms and sophisticated framework technologies, such as object repository, auto discovery and 2D and 3D GUI. The Unicenter TNG Framework supports the full portfolio of desktop management standards, including DMTF/DMI 2.0 and IETF/SNMP. The software is the underlying foundation for Unicenter TNG, the only fully integrated management solution covering network discovery, topology, performance, events and status, security, software distribution, storage, workload, help desk, change management and other functions for the heterogeneous enterprise.
