Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) has announced that Humana Military Healthcare Services (HMHS) has selected CA`s Jasmineii, the eBusiness platform, to build applications providing critical patient information from existing databases to medical offices and hospitals via the Internet.
HMHS maintains its information in DB2 databases on an IBM OS/390 mainframe system with CICS. Until recently, physicians and hospitals requiring patient insurance eligibility information and other data were required to phone or fax the nursing staff at over 30 HMHS offices located throughout the south-eastern United States. A nurse at a green screen terminal would then access the data from an IBM mainframe in a computer centre in Columbia, S.C. and then phone or fax the information back to the healthcare provider.
To make this process more efficient, giving healthcare professionals more time to attend to patient needs, HMHS decided to develop a Web application to provide immediate automatic access to doctors and hospitals over the Internet.
After an extensive evaluation, HMHS selected CA`s Jasmineii, a comprehensive platform that enables organizations take existing data and logic to quickly build, deploy and manage a new generation of intelligent eBusiness solutions. The flexibility of Jasmineii and its ability to quickly integrate existing data into customized Web-based eBusiness applications was key to HMHS.
After only two weeks of onsite training and consulting from CA, two HMHS IT professionals were able to design, develop and implement the new eBusiness application in less than three months -- including integration of the DB2 data with the new Web application. The resulting applications allow healthcare providers to quickly and easily check a patient`s eligibility for medical insurance coverage. They can also submit requests for new authorizations and referrals by simply logging onto the HMHS Web site and entering a password and patient identification. The application also provides specific coverage information for all medical procedures and includes a history of the patient`s previous treatments by all healthcare service providers in the HMHS system.
Because physicians and other healthcare providers now have real time access to all of this information during or even prior to the patient`s visit to their facility, they are able to concentrate on the patient`s needs without losing precious time on administrative details.
Based on the success of the initial Jasmineii application, the HMHS IT department is investigating development of additional Web-based applications to help both its healthcare providers and nursing staff. HMHS also plans to expand access to patients, enabling them to easily verify their own eligibility and coverage.
