Microsoft has reached settlement of R30 000 with Johannesburg-based computer vendor, Computer Telephony Solutions, for copyright infringement of its software products.
Computer Telephony Solutions was found to be hard disk loading Windows Millennium Edition. Hard disk loading is when a person or company buys one copy of an operating system or application and then loads it onto many machines, thereby infringing the supplier`s copyright.
According to Mark Reynolds, in charge of Microsoft SA`s anti-piracy and legalisation division, Computer Telephony Solutions was found to be hard disk loading after a Microsoft anti-piracy team member conducted a test purchase.
The software company also recently took action against Durban-based Beachware Computers CC, Zentek Computers CC and Johannesburg-based Computer Chronics CC for allegedly hard disc loading of the Command.com file.
"Microsoft`s action in protecting its intellectual property serves as a warning to others who are guilty of software piracy," said Reynolds.
