Computerworld Honours Programme names 13 Progress customers as laureates

Johannesburg, 11 Jun 2004

The Computerworld Honours Programme has named 13 Progress customers as laureates for the 2004 Computerworld Honours 21st Century Achievement Awards, which recognise the world`s most creative and innovative uses of information technology in society.

The programme`s committee nominates organisations that are using IT to improve the quality of people`s lives. These organisations are included in the Computerworld Honours online Archive and the Collections of the Academic Council. The latter represents the 40-plus countries with case studies in the collection.

South African open source development specialist MIP Holdings was among those named on the list, which included organisations from across the world. MIP was nominated in the category of business and related services. The company is a pioneer in using Progress`s software as a (SaaS) model, where customers are charged a monthly fee for software, rather than having to make an upfront purchase. This ensures shared and alignment of software with strategy.

Other laureate categories included media, arts and entertainment, finance, insurance and real estate, medicine, manufacturing, education and academia, government and non-profit organisations.

"The Computerworld Honours Medal of Achievement is presented annually to men and women around the world who have made outstanding progress for society through the visionary use of information technology," says Patrick J McGovern, chairman of the Computerworld Honours Chairmen`s Committee and founder of International Data Group.

All 13 of the selected Progress-based applications were built using the award-winning Progress OpenEdge platform, which has itself received accolades for its high functionality and low total cost of ownership.

The nominated Progress partners officially became part of the Computerworld Honours Global Archive on Information Technology.

Rick Parry, MD of Progress Software South Africa, says Progress`s customers around the world have demonstrated vision and leadership in their innovative use of Progress technology, none more so than local software developer MIP Holdings. "Partners like MIP are showing their customers that IT does not have to be an ever-increasing expense, and are heralding a new era of technology delivery that focuses on budgetable costs and guaranteed service. We are honoured to have a South African partner of MIP`s stature.

"Together, Progress and its global network of application partners are in a great position to meet the increasing demand for `exact-fit` applications. The combination of our partners` deep vertical domain expertise and our low total cost of ownership offer companies the world`s best business applications. By simplifying the development, deployment and management of these world-class business applications, companies like the ones honoured by Computerworld can successfully compete and win on a local and global scale."
