The implementation of the Convergence Bill will likely take place later this year, and once it passes into law, operators and vendors will renew their interest in fixed mobile convergence.

In doing so, players in this sector will need to assess the strategic opportunities and threats posed by an accelerated drive towards converged services and to focus their business plans accordingly.

The Business Zone is hosting the Fixed Mobile Convergence Conference 2005 at the VW Conference Centre in Midrand on 4 and 5 July.

The event aims to provide a practical analysis of successful business models as well as a realistic evaluation of the revenue potential of fixed mobile convergence.

Among the speakers are Gateway Communications MD Mike van den Bergh; Transtel CTO Angus Hay; Sara Coppo, head of Vodacom`s fixed mobile division; Thami Mtshali, MD of Business Solutions; and Winston Smith, wireless portfolio manager at Sentech.

The conference will focus on a number of key issues, including whether fixed mobile is a viable business model, the challenges of deploying voice over IP in a converged environment, and the background to fixed mobile convergence.

It will also deal with such challenges as global standards, setting up the necessary architecture, integrating 3G, WiFi and other wireless technologies through to the issues of billing and customer care in a converged landscape.
