Consulting job 'frenzy` coming soon

SA looks set to mirror a new boom in the consulting jobs market, says local IT recruitment company Abacus Recruitment.

Abacus director Org Geldenhuys says there has been a sudden surge in the IT consulting jobs market, with pundits saying this can be likened to the job frenzy or positive job sentiment last witnessed in the dot-com era.

Geldenhuys says according to online news site Top-Consultant.com, there has been phenomenal activity in the consulting jobs market over the past six months, particularly in the UK market. This upbeat sentiment appears to be spreading to the US too.

"No matter what sceptics may think, this 'consulting job frenzy` is finding its way into the local market, albeit not at the levels seen in the UK.

"Only a year ago candidates in these markets would have been fairly negative about finding an exciting and rewarding career in the consultancy world. But now, it appears, candidates are in short supply."

Geldenhuys says the growth is "amazing" and there is no reason why this trend cannot be emulated - even to a lesser extent - in SA.

"We have seen a lot of buoyancy locally in recent months - in fact, longer - and it is very likely that the sentiment that is rising overseas may reach us and give us even more of a push."

However, he notes that there are two local stumbling blocks. "One is the fact that right now, there are a lot of IT consultancy posts available - and posts in general - but they cannot be filled because of a dire skills shortage. In addition, our employment are more restrictive than our overseas counterparts in terms of selection and this limits our playing field and the number of people who can enter it and take up the slack."
