Enterasys Networks has announced a new way to bring the worlds of business and technology closer together by introducing the "User Personalised Network".
This new system is said to understand the relationships between the users of a network system and their business roles within an organization, and leverage that understanding to dynamically provide secure, personalised access to IT services.
"The User Personalised Network simplifies complex networks to give people the tools needed to do their jobs, while maximizing security and efficiency to allow an organisation to meet its business goals," says Martin May, Enterasys Networks SA regional director.
"Until now, switches, routers and other network devices have not understood the concept of `people.` The User Personalised Network bridges the gap between business, technology, and individual needs by understanding the relationship between these three areas and mapping technology resources to each person, securely and in real time, based on their role in the company."
The User Personalised Network underlines Enterasys` continuing commitment to security and its recently announced Secure Harbour` architecture by enabling network managers to deploy complex security rules in an automated fashion and by providing authentication at all network entry points.
"It answers the challenge of how to control access to, and deliver information throughout, a global enterprise, while still protecting confidential data vital to a company`s success," says May.
"Enterasys has developed a unique policy-based system that allows the network to allocate resources based on specific users and their roles.
What makes this interesting is that the policy is executed at the switch," adds May.
The User Personalised Network is based on the concept that the only way to make technology truly meaningful to business is through a system that is tailored to the individual person, including mobile users.
Instead of an Information Technology model that focuses on technology as the goal, this system allows business success to be the goal, and provides technology components to facilitate that goal.
It defines who a person is on the network, regardless of location, and provides them with the appropriate level of service.
The User Personalised Network is delivered using a combination of Enterasys hardware and software products that create three critical components:
Authentication
- Web-based (and 802.1x) identification and authentication of users, using standards-based protocols such as RADIUS;
Role-Based Administration
- Using Enterasys` NetSight Policy Manager application to model business roles and IT capabilities;
Service-Enabled (network) edge
- Implementing complex policy rules at the closest possible point to the network user, utilizing Enterasys switches.
In addition, Enterasys has committed that the User Personalized Network will support the IEEE`s emerging 802.1x standard for port-based access control.
