Converging technologies become a reality with Datacraft Asia & Samsung deal

Johannesburg, 13 Aug 1999

Convergent technologies, combining the power of voice, video and , took another step towards becoming part of our everyday life with the of a three-year partnership agreement between industry giants Datacraft Asia and Samsung.

The two companies are well-positioned to exploit this exciting technology which is set to sideline the PC with a host of new devices and services.

A Dimension Data subsidiary, Datacraft Asia is the region`s leading communications and systems integrator. In terms of the deal Datacraft Asia will market, distribute and support Samsung`s leading-edge technology, including cable TV network digital modems, ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) modems and Internet video phones through its extensive existing network.

Voice and video convergent technology is particularly important in developing regions suffering from shortages of qualified teachers and classrooms, as they have great potential in education and distance learning. One teacher is able to reach hundreds or thousands of learners many miles away and all that`s required is easy-to-use and implement technology.

Richard Came, marketing director, Dimension Data Holdings, says the deal indicates a major shift in the communications industry.

"The history of the Windows-based PC or terminal is drawing to a close. In the future, users will be accessing a wide variety of networked end devices, such as web TV set top boxes, PDA`s , mobile phones, household appliances and motor vehicles."

Ettienne Reinecke, Didata`s director: global services and technology, comments: "This deal enhances Dimension Data`s leading position in the converging technologies. We predicted it would happen and this is only the beginning," he adds and points out that the Asian markets are moving upward again and Telco`s and Service Providers are starting to invest in this technology.

"Fast, reliable and cost-effective Internet access is the critical success factor in convergence and the economies of scale in production will lower the cost of entry to broadband Internet service. The partnership will accelerate the move to multimedia networks across the Asian region.

"One of the new devices we can expect to see a great deal of is Samsung`s Web Video Phone (WVP), the world`s first network appliance that combines all modes of electronic communication - video phone, Internet browser, and email terminal - with a user friendly touch screen menu. VWP, unlike other videophones, interacts with any PC, Internet phone or any terminal that support videoconferencing protocols," Reinecke concludes.
