COOL:Gen 6 transforms bricks-and-mortar operations to e-business

Johannesburg, 02 Oct 2001

Bytes Business Solutions has announced the local availability of Computer Associates` COOL:Gen 6.0 application development environment. It enables the rapid design, deployment and maintenance of scalable enterprise e-business applications.

Organisations are finding they need to leverage the business logic, data, and processing power in their legacy systems as they move ahead with new e-business initiatives.

"The recent expansion of new e-business ventures in traditional companies requires the innovative development of Web-based applications," says Christian Bowker, Bytes Business Solutions sales director.

"Organisations must respond quickly to new market demands by implementing robust solutions that leverage proven business processes. With COOL:Gen 6.0, organisations can build scalable, transaction-intensive e-business solutions that are easily modified as the business changes."

Major new features include Web client enablement and integration with the Jasmine ii e-business platform, allowing companies to reduce their Web development costs and speed time to market for Web-based applications. COOL:Gen 6.0`s scalability, broad features and ability to support complex information architectures - including legacy Cobol code - enables organisations to transform their "bricks-and-mortar" IT operations into e-businesses.

"Our clients have used COOL:Gen as the backbone for very large financial management/e-commerce systems and case management systems. The new Web client enablement features add an even greater capability to build these types of applications in a model-based environment."

In addition to streamlining the integration of Cobol applications into Web-based development, COOL:Gen 6.0 extends the communications capabilities of applications beyond standard synchronous connectivity to embrace Web, wireless, and other emerging standards. COOL:Gen also employs advanced visualisation techniques to simplify interface design and component integration, boosting the productivity of development teams.

The component-based development (CBD) methodology in COOL:Gen 6.0 promotes the structured use and sharing of design models and reusable software components, making it easier for organisations to manage complex development efforts across teams of developers.

Using COOL:Gen, developers can produce e-business applications that support traditional GUI and Web-based clients, while maximising component reuse across multiple development projects. Integration with Jasmine ii ensures that online business processes can flow securely between organisations and their partners and suppliers. COOL:Gen also provides analytical facilities to track and analyse business activity across those online processes.

It enables the building of e-business applications that can measure, monitor, and predict key business outcomes. "The combination of COOL:Gen and Jasmine ii provides our customers with an integration solution for tying together all the pieces of an e-business environment," adds Bowker. "Jasmine ii provides a single business view that integrates applications databases, objects and components, and COOL:Gen delivers new business processes and transactions that streamline e-business deployment."

COOL:Gen 6.0 supports leading relational database systems, middleware, and operating system environments including Unix, Windows NT, and OS/390.
