Apple's representative in SA, the Core Group, handed over a cheque of R300 000 to The Tomorrow Trust, at a function at the Core Group's head office in Johannesburg, yesterday.

Director of the Core Group, RJ van Spaandonk, said the money was raised through the sale of the limited release 'Red' iPods, which were sold at selected retailers during December.

“We have donated R150 from each of the iPods sold to The Tomorrow Trust and we are sure that the donation will be well spent on investing in the future of the youth and equip our leaders of tomorrow,” he added.

Kim Feinberg, CEO of The Tomorrow Trust, made it clear the organisation is not simply a bursary fund and said it takes a complete vested interest to and empower young individuals who has been orphaned as a result of HIV/Aids.

“Our approach provides these kids not only with money for education, but for food, transport and accommodation, access to social workers and mentoring as well as weekly communications to find out how they are doing,” Feinberg said.

According to The Tomorrow Trust, it costs the organisation in the region of R65 000 per year to sustain a student studying at a university in the trust programme. This includes living expenses and not only study fees.

The R300 000, according to Feinberg, will be invested in the trust's post secondary department, to pay for study fees and textbooks for college and university students.

Van Spaandonk said he was pleasantly surprised to see the South African consumers' support for an iPod product that was specially targeted at raising money for funding charitable causes.
