Key trends in the IT industry are set to have a big impact on the corporate in 2013.

So says Sean Nourse, executive for connectivity services at Solutions, who adds that these trends include the (uniquely identifiable objects and their virtual representations in an Internet-like structure), big data and the rise of the application-based computing paradigm.

These trends will become more relevant and prominent, says Nourse, and will "significantly increase the amount and type of data traversing the corporate network".

Nourse believes the continued adoption of cloud computing and the proliferation of mobile devices in the workplace, driven largely by the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend, will also contribute to the increase in data on the corporate network.

Vox Telecom shares a similar belief, saying the biggest impact on the corporate network will be more mobile access to corporate systems through access point name (APN) and WiFi.

Vox adds: "BYOD will continue to accelerate and need not impact the corporate network negatively if businesses implement effective mobile device management (MDM) strategies and utilise cutting-edge technologies, such as Cloudware, which enables the delivery of legacy applications to virtually any device seamlessly and instantly."

This explosion of data will pose a challenge to CIOs and network managers, who will "be faced with the challenge of effectively managing this data explosion to achieve a consistent end-user quality of experience (QoE) for office-bound and mobile workers", Nourse adds.

This will necessitate the evolution to an application-aware, optimised platform by corporate networks, Nourse said.

"Prioritising mission-critical applications and ensuring an adequate QoE for end-users on mission-critical applications is required to ensure business efficiency and to deliver the business agility required for ongoing operational competitiveness.

"Companies also have to ensure optimal network behaviour as it will have a direct impact on workforce productivity," adds Nourse.

"The number one priority (for CIOs) is increased network resilience," said Vox, concluding that CIOs' top priority for 2013 would be "further optimisation of the existing network".
