Black empowerment company, Choice Technologies, has won a significant government tender - the upgrading of network equipment and wiring infrastructures at more than 240 prisons, community offices, within various Provincial Commissioners offices throughout South Africa.
The R 12 -million contract - which is valid for a two-year period - will support moves towards a "high-availability" network for the Department of Correctional Services` many mission-critical software applications.
The contract also supports the conversion of non-Y2K compliant installations and the full integration of the Department`s information technology (IT) infrastructure on a nation-wide basis, says IT director (Correctional Services) MP Mallane.
Central to the project is the upgrading of more than 200 decentralised local area networks within the Department`s IT environment.
The networks run administrative software applications, desktop applications and distributed information databases, together with a range of confidential systems.
From a technical perspective, the upgrade features the inclusion of Managed 3Com high speed switches, bringing dedicated 10/100 Mbps Ethernet/ Fast Ethernet to the desktop in a move away from the previously employed Token Ring and Shared Ethernet platforms.
The sites feature a Mod-Tap Category 5 wiring infrastructure and are supported by APC uninterruptible power supply systems (UPSs)
