The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) has spoken out against TopTV, which plans to introduce adult entertainment to the satellite television industry.

Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven says, should the proposed broadcasting of three 24-hour adult channels come to fruition, it will “exploit and demean women and girls, reinforce sexist attitudes and encourage the abuse of women”.

For fear of association with pornographic broadcasting, Cosatu yesterday sent a letter to Collin Matjila, CEO of investment company Kopano Ke Matla, which is a shareholder in TopTV. The letter calls upon Matjila to demand that the pay-TV operator abandons its plans to launch the adult channels, and to disinvest from the company should it refuse.

Kopano Ke Matla Investment Company was established by the Kopano Ke Matla Trust, whose sole beneficiary is Cosatu.

The letter says pornographic material would “contribute to a lowering of moral standards in the country and further erode the revolutionary morality of our struggle movement”. It adds that Cosatu is “very concerned” it could be seen to be condoning and effectively funding the pornographic channels.

Matjila had not commented by the time of publication.
