The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu's) first in a series of planned protests has hit a snag and may not go ahead tomorrow as the union envisioned.

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) says Cosatu failed to obtain the requisite authorisation.

"Cosatu's previous e-toll protests were authorised. Any protest that takes place has to be authorised by both the JMPD and the police."

He says the JMPD will not allow the protest to go ahead without proper authorisation.

Meanwhile, Cosatu has approached the Magistrates Court in an attempt to get the go-ahead despite the JMPD's refusal. General secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says he has asked the magistrate to grant Cosatu permission for the planned protest tomorrow.

Vavi has taken to Twitter to update followers on the situation. "Will keep u informed." (sic)
